![As we gear up for our mainstage concert on Aug 18 (link in our bio), we'll be introducing the artists you'll get to hear.
Meet pianist Sayaka Tanikawa! Sayaka is one of the founding members of the Duluth Chamber Music Festival.
"Duluth holds a special place in my heart for so many reasons, but over many years this city has become a gathering place with dear friends. Matt Young, my longtime chamber music partner [and San Francisco Symphony violist], and I now live on the opposite coasts of the US. A few times a year, we would fly to Duluth—a halfway point for us—to gather with our friends who have settled here. There are many things we enjoy in Duluth, from sailing on Lake Superior to spontaneous music-making—sometimes with/for a small group of friends. From there, the festival idea was born."
Sayaka has many diverse interests outside of music, including visual arts, which she majored in at Columbia University. (Her senior thesis was on the making and marketing of early Netherlandish painting.)

"German Romantic composer Robert Schumann once remarked that all of the arts are the same, only the materials differ, and he said that he learned as much about music from his literary idols like ETA Hoffman as he did from J.S. Bach. I also feel the same way! I’m fascinated by the endless possibilities of human expression, be it visual arts, literature, music or food."
